Few people have had the lasting impact on electronic music as DJ Spen, aka Sean Spencer. Always championing an uplifting, feel good and spiritual brand of house music; DJ Spen makes dancefloors dance and feel at the same time. Frequently touring the US and Europe as well as in the Far East and Australia, Spen makes regular appearances for Defected at their flagship residencies at Ministry Of Sound and Pacha Ibiza, and is known for his amazing dexterity behind the decks, which is no doubt influenced by the fact that in his early days he was a hip hop head who did a number of regional radio shows and productions as Numarx. Spen was soon turned on to house music thanks to his partnership with Teddy Douglas and Jay Stienhour as The Basement Boys. Their unique fusion of gospel, jazz, disco and house cemented the foundations of Spen’s illustrious career and in 1994 the trio set up the now seminal Basement Boys Records. Plenty of commercial success followed with releases such as A Feelin’ and Solid Ground. As a remixer Spen also put his flourishes on Diana Ross’ Everything But The Girl, plus tracks by Roy Davis Jr, Robert Owens and Toni Braxton. As the boss of his own label ‘Code Red’ he has also worked with the likes of Ultra Nate, Marc Evans, Anne Nesby, Michelle Weeks, Sybil and Knee Deep, as well as releasing a number of club anthems such as Gabryelle and 4 The Love featuring Karizma. Many people try, but few achieve the universal approval of this global house icon.
